LYON AREA ROTARIANS ARE ACTIVE IN OUR COMMUNITY:

 

Lyon Area Rotary Club Community Speaker Series

Lyon Area Rotary is presenting a free in-person speaker series at the Salem South Lyon District Library.  Check our Upcoming Events tabs for more details. 

Lyon Area Rotary Community Garden Plot

Lyon Area Rotary is growing crops in the Lyon Township Community Garden to donate to the South Lyon Active Faith food pantry with fresh produce. 

South Lyon Summer Lunch Program

Lyon Area Rotary is dedicated to supporting this worthwhile program, both financially and through our volunteer efforts, to help provide summer lunches to children in need.  We are partnering with many organization to maintain and expand this expand. 

 

Outstanding Senior Community Service Scholarships:

Lyon Area Rotary provides two $1000.00 scholarships, awarded to one senior from each of the local South Lyon high schools

Most Improved High School Students Scholarships: 

Lyon Area Rotary awards $100.00 scholarships to twenty most improved high school students. Ten selected from each of the local South Lyon high schools. 

Blankets for the Needy Outreach:

Lyon Area Rotarians works with the middle school youth at St. Joesph Church to make over 70 fleece blankets, which we have distributed to such organizations as the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, Jail and Outreach Ministry in Pontiac, Eddy's Women's House in Detroit, Ann Arbor's Veteran's Hospital, and South Lyon Active Faith Community Services.   

South Lyon Area Youth Assistance: 

Lyon Area Rotary partners with this local youth organization through funding and assistance to support their various community programs.  We help sponsor the Back to School Shopping Program serving families and children in the Lyon Area. 

Survivors of Human Trafficking Support Projects

Lyon Area Rotary is working many advocacy groups who focus is on identifying, resourcing, educating, supporting survivors of human trafficking and programs with a focus on prevention and informing individuals, families, and community members about human trafficking in and around our local area. 

South Lyon F.I.R.S.T. Robotics:

Lyon Area Rotary works together with The Flying Toasters, the high school robotics team and The Techno Toasters, the middle school robotic team,  combining efforts to run community service projects together and volunteering at the F.I.R.S.T. Lego League Tournament they host. We also provide financial support for their competitive robotics program.

Horse's Haven, Michigan Humane Society, and Paws Animal Rescue: Lyon Area Rotarians volunteer to help community organizations that focus on the rescue and care of our animal friends. 

South Lyon Special Stars: Lyon Area Rotarians offer support to this community based organization and enjoy hosting an annual dance party for these special athletes and having them join us in the SL Pumpkinfest Parade.   

Operation Injured Soldiers: The Lyon Area Rotary Club sponsors a veteran golf team to play in the annual golf outing, as well as volunteering to help at OIS fundraising events.

Families Building Faith: Lyon Area Rotarians work with this local organization through in kind donations and volunteer service to help support their expansive local and community outreach projects.

Active Faith Community Service:  Through the years, Lyon Area Rotarians have shown their support of this organization through food and monetary donations, and assistance in the local food pantry.  During COVID19 we reallocated funds to help support the increased need for food by the children and families in our community. 

Emmanuel House for Homeless Veterans:  Our club has adopted this as our focus homeless shelter, supporting their veterans directly with blankets for each resident veteran, supporting their personal hygiene backpack project, serving in their soup kitchen, providing masks, gloves, hand sanitizers, and protective medical face shields and coveralls for staff and residents during their COVID19 isolation.  Emmanuel House not only provides residency for our veterans, but offers medical stability, employment  and job training, recovery treatment, and support to develop self-reliance and independence.   

 

Wreaths Across American Project:  Girl Scout Troops 71323 and 76144 introduced the Lyon Area Rotary Club to this cemetery wreaths for veterans project, which recognizes veterans nationwide and in our community.  We are happy support their efforts in this worthy cause. 

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS:  Lyon Area Rotarians work together with many community organizations to help support their causes and the good work they do.  For more information about our partners, check out our PARTNERSHIPS tab. 

LYON AREA ROTARIANS ARE INVOLVED IN INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS:

Adopt-a-School in Peru Project:  Working with the Detroit Zoological Society, Lyon Area Rotary funds a school in Peru each year and assists in delivering supplies to over 130   schools in remote villages along the Amazon River.  One of our members has traveled to Peru for the past 19 years, working hard to make this a successful project.  

 

Peru Village Project Improvements: We have also supported water purification projects, latrines, and community kitchen facilities in these villages.  

 

Peru Music Program: Lyon Area Rotarians spearheaded and fully-funded the start up of a centrally based music program for the village children and provide musical instruments and sheet music for the expanding program. 

 

Peru "School Bus" Boat: Due to the generous donations of a Lyon Area Rotarian, a boat was purchased to help transport students to schools in nearby villages if their own villages are too small to have a school of their own.   The boat can also transport children to the central library and music program.

Other International Projects: Lyon Area Rotarians has also supported these projects, either through funding or volunteer assistance around the world:

  • R.E.L.A.Y. Rotarians Enhancing Learning of African Youth

END POLIO NOW: 

Rotary is an international community that brings together leaders who step up to take on the world’s toughest challenges, locally and globally. The eradication of polio is one of Rotary International’s longest standing and most significant efforts. We have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide and we won't stop until we end the disease for good.
